Cognitive decline — when a person begins having trouble remembering, learning new things or making everyday decisions — affects tens of millions of people in the United States. A recent study by John Hopkins concluded that untreated hearing loss accelerates cognitive decline in adults between the ages of 75 and 84 by 30-40 percent.
Then, this past fall, researchers in France found that wearing hearing aids eliminates that acceleration, proving that untreated hearing loss can significantly impact a person’s overall health.
Our own Dr. Dave Fabry has been an outspoken advocate on the mental health benefits of treating hearing loss. Read his recent post in the ASHA Leader Blog and his column in USA Today to see how he’s bringing attention to these benefits and the important role hearing professionals and hearing aids play.
